Richard Jones moderated a luncheon program titled "Inside California's Office of Tax Appeals: Structure, Process, and Practice Insights for SALT Practitioners," on January 16, at the American Bar Association's Midyear Tax Meeting in San Diego, CA. The three-day conference (Jan 14-17) brought together government officials and tax industry leaders to discuss current state, local and federal tax policy. 

The panel included senior leadership from the OTA who provided insight into the California's Office of Tax Appeals (OTA), its structure and jurisdiction, and how it adjudicates state tax disputes involving the Franchise Tax Board, the California Department of Tax and Fee administration, and the Employment Development Department. The session offered practical guidance for state and local tax practitioners navigating OTA procedures during tax appeals. Panelists included Kristen Kane, Chief Counsel at the OTA, and Myriam Bouaziz, Director at the OTA.
