London, UK – International law firm Sullivan & Worcester is pleased to announce that last night it won the award for "Legal Innovation in Trade" at the Trade Finance Global (TFG) Trade, Treasury and Payment Awards 2023.

The awards were announced at the 2023 Global Council Forum organised by BAFT, held in Toronto, as part of Sibos 2023. This is the seventh year TFG has held its awards which recognise those who have made exceptional contributions to the world of trade, treasury, and payments.

This award follows several awards for Sullivan in recent years including being named:

  • "Best Export Finance Law Firm" at the Global Trade Review (GTR) ‘Leaders in Trade Awards’ 2023
  • "Best Trade Finance Law Firm" at the TFG ‘International Trade Awards’ 2022 in cooperation with BAFT
  • "Best Trade or Supply Chain Finance Law Firm" at the GTR ‘Leaders in Trade Awards’ 2023
  • "Law Firm of the Year" in the category ‘Leaders in Trade for Innovation’ at the GTR "Leaders in Trade Awards" 2021

Sullivan’s team in London and New York leads the way in trade finance, combining extensive experience structuring deals with an innovative approach, and long standing client and industry relationships.

With the continuing rise in the demand from clients and industry bodies in relation to digital solutions for trade finance and significantly more advice being sought around the Electronic Trade Documents Act 2023 (ETDA), the firm has been playing a pivotal role in helping the industry draft electronic documentation used by commercial parties, financers and fintechs as alternative financing solutions for trade finance facilities and supply chain/receivables finance transactions.

Geoffrey Wynne, head of the Trade & Export Finance Group and Sullivan’s London office, commented: "Sullivan is delighted to have been recognised by TFG, again this year, for legal innovation in trade and trade finance. This is a fantastic endorsement of our forward-looking approach to supporting our clients and industry bodies as we come together to ensure that the legal framework for trade and trade finance transactions - not least through the ETDA - is fitting for the digital era."

Sullivan’s trade and export finance team works with banks, financial institutions, funds, ECAs, multi-laterals, corporate borrowers, agents and trustees, and national and international organisations providing the full range of trade, commodity and export finance services, often in developing markets. The firm also advises on restructurings, disputes, insurance and regulatory issues relating to trade and export finance transactions.

In addition to advising on multi-jurisdictional transactions for clients across trade and export finance, project finance, asset finance, Islamic finance, securitisation, securities law, insurance, tax, compliance and dispute resolution, the team advises on deals involving all types of commodities including softs, metals, oil and gas, as well as receivables, structured financial instruments, trade services, ECA and trade disputes across emerging markets.

The firm’s advice across the growing digitalisation and fintech space includes advising clients and industry associations such as the ICC, BAFT and ITFA in drafting rules and guidance for the fintech world.
