Ensuring Food Security – A Renewed Priority
When: February 22, 2023
Location: GTR MENA 2023, Dubai
People: Simon Cook

Simon Cook moderated a panel discussion titled "Ensuring Food Security – A Renewed Priority" at Global Trade Review’s (GTR) MENA 2023 – Thriving in Turbulent Times, held in Dubai on February 22, 2023.

Although, as a net oil exporter, the MENA region is better placed than many of its contemporaries, concerns over food prices continue to undermine market confidence for investors as governments, regulators and industry seek to shore up supply. The impact of Ukraine on the agricultural production supply chain of wheat, grain and fertiliser has been severe, particularly in light of high shipping costs and severe disruptions to the shipping sector.

This session discussed themes including alternative sourcing plans and the consequences on pricing and supply chains, the impact of higher borrowing costs on corporates and their bank relationships, how higher rates and inflation affect the SME sector, as well as the impact of geopolitical factors such as the Black Sea Grain Corridor agreement and concerns over its likely extension.

The panel discussion was preceded by a presentation by Torbjorn Soltvedt, Principal Analyst, Middle East & North Africa for Verisk Maplecroft.
