Geoffrey Wynne, Head of Sullivan’s Trade & Export Finance Group and its London office, has been quoted in a recent TXF article examining Korea’s Eximbank’s $1 billion financing agreement with Glencore, an agreement designed to secure copper supplies for Korean industry.

In the article, "Glencore: Financing Korea’s Copper Security," Geoff discusses the growing role of commodity traders in securing strategic raw materials, particularly as export credit agencies (ECAs) seek to leverage established global sourcing networks rather than rely solely on financing new mining projects.

Commenting on the wider implications for trade finance, Geoff says: “I think the trade finance market will be looking much more at structures designed to secure essential supplies for counterparties including governments.”

He also considers the potential for replicating these arrangements, particularly through smaller financing facilities, as well as the implications for banks as major commodity traders increasingly assume responsibility for arranging transactions and financing suppliers.
