Ryan Tompkins spoke in a virtual meeting hosted by the Boston Bar Association (BBA) titled 'Trusts and Estates Mid-Year Review' on January 30, 2025.

This annual event covers recent federal and state case law, legislation and tax law matters. This year's program included updates from:

New Developments Committee: the committee reported on developments in the Corporate Transparency Act, the Massachusetts estate tax, and recent cases regarding the Massachusetts Principal and Income Act, a no-contest clause, ownership of rings after a broken engagement, and revocation of a will.

Public Policy Committee: the committee reported on various bills filed and passed during the prior two-year legislative cycle, as well as those expected to be filed in 2025. Updates included legislation pertaining to decanting, digital assets, unitrusts, and special needs trusts for seniors. The committee also discussed other topics of interest to Trusts & Estates practitioners.

Tax Law Updates Committee: the committee reported on recent developments in federal and Massachusetts tax law including recent challenges and guidance related to the Corporate Transparency Act and cases, private letter rulings and other written determinations in the estate, gift, GST, retirement benefits, and income taxes and tax compliance realms.
