The Federal Bar Association's 50th Annual Tax Law Conference
When: March 6, 2026
Location: Virtual
People: Richard L. Jones

Richard Jones joined a panel titled "Worth Your SALT: Constitutional Limitations and Current Controversies in State and Local Tax" at the Federal Bar Association's 50th Annual Tax Law Conference, which was held virtually on March 5–6, 2026. The two-day program brought together leading tax practitioners to discuss timely developments across federal, state, local and international tax, with a focus on practical insights for today’s evolving tax landscape.

Rich's session offered a “nuts and bolts” refresher on core principles of state and local taxation, including constitutional limits on state taxing power, the structure of state income taxation and the basics of sales and use tax. Panelists examined key developments such as economic nexus in the wake of Wayfair, apportionment disputes and the ways state revenue departments are testing the boundaries of their taxing authority. The panel was moderated by Andrew Reiter of Blue J and also featured Mathew Landwehr of Thompson Coburn LLP.
