Sullivan & Worcester Joins Diversity Lab's Mansfield Rule 5.0 Certification Process to Increase Diversity, Equity & Inclusion in Firm Leadership
BOSTON, MA – International law firm Sullivan & Worcester announced today that it has joined over 160 law firms participating in the Mansfield Rule 5.0 Certification process, which begins July 15 and aims to raise representation of historically underrepresented lawyers in law firm leadership.
"We’re very proud to be among the law firms working toward creating a diverse and truly inclusive workplace," said Joel Carpenter, managing partner of Sullivan. "This collaborative led effort by Diversity Lab will undoubtedly deliver long-lasting and concrete benefits not only to our firm, but to the legal industry as a whole."
The Mansfield Rule was named for Arabella Mansfield, the first woman admitted to practice law in the United States. The Rule measures, among other things, whether law firms have affirmatively considered at least 30 percent women lawyers, lawyers of color, LGBTQ+ lawyers, and lawyers with disabilities for firm leadership and governance roles, equity partner promotions, formal client pitch opportunities, and senior lateral positions. Ultimately, the goal is to boost representation of historically underrepresented lawyers in law firm leadership by broadening the pool of candidates considered for those opportunities. This year, Mansfield Rule participation has grown by 90% with 49 new firms and an expansion into the UK.
"Law firms that have participated in the Mansfield Rule Certification process have shown measurable progress in terms of recruiting, retaining and promoting diverse attorneys," said Angela Gomes, a partner in Sullivan’s Corporate practice and co-chair of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee. "Our participation in the certification process sends a signal to our clients, colleagues and the larger community that we take the advancement of diversity, equity and inclusion issues seriously and are committed to increasing, fostering and sustaining a diverse, equitable and inclusive workforce."
