In the New Normal, There Are No Excuses for Not Building a Diverse Talent Pipeline
Joel Carpenter was quoted in the article, "In the New Normal, There Are No Excuses for Not Building a Diverse Talent Pipeline," which was published in The American Lawyer [sub. req.] on June 24, 2021.
Joel dicusses how the pandemic has changed how law firms approach recruiting young attorneys, describing how Sullivan's hiring committee made a point of looking outside its usual set of local law schools last year when hiring: “The thing people used to do was go to the top three schools and create a pool of candidates of people who are in the top 10% of their class...[w]e’ve realized over the years that GPA doesn’t tell the whole story on capability.”
According to Joel, this marks a conserted effort on the part of law firms to commit to recruiting more diverse talent: “If your goal is to fix the world overnight, it won’t happen. What you have to do is commit."
