Sullivan Ranks #5 Nationally as one of American Cancer Society’s Top Fundraising Making Strides Teams in 2011
BOSTON, MA – February 1, 2012 – Sullivan, a corporate law firm based in Boston, with offices in New York and Washington, D.C., has been recognized by the American Cancer Society (the Society) as the fifth-highest National Pacesetters Fundraising team in the country for 2011. This news comes on the heels of two other exciting announcements: Sullivan has won the Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Law Firm Challenge for the seventh time in eight years, and also earned top honors as the top-ranked Making Strides fundraising team in Boston and the entire New England Division.
The “Sullivan Dream Team,” the firm’s group of employees and friends, works to raise funds for the Challenge all year long. They once again raised the most money among participating Boston-area law firms. The team participated in the 19th Annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk, which took place on Sunday, October 2, 2011 at the DCR Hatch Shell in Boston.
According to the American Cancer Society, Sullivan raised the most funds for the 2011 Challenge and achieved a firm record – $72,067, nearly double what was raised by the team last year. All funds raised support the Society’s mission to save lives and create a world with less cancer and more birthdays by helping people stay well and get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back. “I am personally humbled by the work our firm does all year long, in these tough economic times, to raise such a significant amount of money for this great cause,” said Dianne Hertneky, chief operating officer of Sullivan. “It’s wonderful to see their tireless efforts recognized with such distinction. It’s never about the final amount, though, as the Society reminds us; every dollar counts.”
Hertneky says it’s a testament to the firm’s incredible team, many of whom have friends or family members whose lives have been impacted by breast cancer. “Our team keeps growing every year, and everyone continues to pitch in through a variety of different efforts. This year, our offices in New York and Washington, D.C. were very involved, and the friendly competition among all of our employees really paid off,” she added. “I’m very proud of our firm.”
Law Firm Challenge Team Co-Captains: Paralegal Chris Bullock and Administrative Assistant Patti Flannery, continue to head up the grassroots effort that has produced all seven Law Firm Challenge wins to date. Their endeavors have included “pizza wars” among the firm’s floors for recruiting and fundraising; an in-house, on-line silent auction that includes all three of the firm’s offices; a craft fair and raffle featuring homemade items; sales of the “Sullivan Family Cookbook” and a host of other creative initiatives, like collecting fees for “Jeans Friday,” that produced real results. The Co-Captains are also charged with assembling teams every year for Making Strides, scheduled this year for Sunday, October 14th at the DCR Hatch Shell in Boston.
In 2011, 27 law firms joined the Making Strides Law Firm Challenge and collectively raised more than $151,699, for the fight against breast cancer. The Society implemented the challenge in 2001, to foster friendly competition among local law firms participating in its annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. Since that time, firms have raised over a million dollars for the cause; Sullivan has contributed $336,475 during the course of the Challenge.
"Sullivan's consistent, continued support of the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Law Firm Challenge has made them a leader in fight against breast cancer," said Lauren Barrett, Community Executive for Development with the American Cancer Society. "They are tremendously dedicated, growing their efforts year after year, and setting the standard for fundraising excellence. In 2011, Sullivan was the top fundraising Making Strides team in New England and was the leader of 2011 Making Strides Law Firm Challenge. We are truly appreciative of their extraordinary efforts to work toward a world with less breast cancer and more birthdays."
Sullivan staffers credit management at the firm for their ability to win the Challenge, year after year. “Our COO, Dianne Hertneky, communicates to our employees how important it is to take our charitable efforts to the next level. We like to call her our ‘Chief Motivating Officer’,” says Bullock. “She really leads by example, and that has allowed us to build a real support system around the effort,” adds Flannery. “We couldn’t continue to do what we do, and attract new members to the team without Dianne’s support. She is a great role model for us.”
Bullock and Flannery have really commandeered the fundraising efforts at Sullivan. He continues to run a successful cookie baking business within the firm that fully benefits Making Strides (although he’ll never give up his secret recipe!), and she has been just as entrepreneurial, maintaining a lunchtime knitting group whose creations are also sold or auctioned off for the cause. Flannery was also one of only 49 individuals who received the 2008 American Cancer Society Sandra C. Labaree New England Volunteer Values Award. The whole firm gets on board, though, pulling in vendors to donate, friends to fundraise, and giving fellow staffers undergoing final cancer treatments a send-off, complete with flowers and a small celebration.

Since its inception in 1993, Making Strides in Boston has raised $49 million to support the American Cancer Society’s critical mission to save lives and create a world with less cancer and more birthdays.

About the American Cancer Society
The American Cancer Society combines an unyielding passion with nearly a century of experience to save lives and end suffering from cancer. As a global grassroots force of more than three million volunteers, we fight for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. We save lives by helping people stay well by preventing cancer or detecting it early; helping people get well by being there for them during and after a cancer diagnosis; by finding cures through investment in groundbreaking discovery; and by fighting back by rallying lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and by rallying communities worldwide to join the fight. As the nation’s largest non-governmental investor in cancer research, contributing about $3.6 billion, we turn what we know about cancer into what we do. As a result, about 11 million people in America who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will be celebrating birthdays this year.
