Sullivan’s Dream Team Wins Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Law Firm Challenge AND the 2015 Sandra C. Labaree Volunteer Values Award
Boston, MA – April 1, 2015 – Sullivan, a corporate law firm based in Boston, with offices in London, New York and Washington, D.C., was recently crowned the winner of the 2014 Boston Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Law Firm Challenge. In addition to this honor, the firm was named the winner of the organization’s 2015 Sandra C. Labaree Volunteer Values Award.
Each year, the American Cancer Society’s New England Division Board of Directors selects the most inspired and passionate individuals, whose service best exemplifies the Society’s organizational values of mission, stewardship, diversity and respect, to receive this prestigious honor.
The "S&W Dream Team," the firm’s group of employees and friends, works to raise funds for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Law Firm Challenge all year long. Once again, the firm raised the most money among participating Boston-area law firms contributing more than $62,000 of the $86,000 Boston total. For 10 of the past 11 years, the firm has been the top Boston fundraiser for the Making Strides Challenge.
"It is an honor to be able to use our time and resources to give back to an organization that has made major strides in the fight against breast cancer," noted Sullivan’s Managing Partner, Joel R. Carpenter. "Congratulations to the many members of our team who worked tirelessly to make this happen. This honor is very gratifying but also bittersweet as we recently lost our COO Dianne Hertneky, who was the lynchpin in organizing our firm’s participation over the years. Dianne was the ultimate champion for Making Strides and she will be deeply missed by all of us."
Law Firm Challenge Team Co-Captains, paralegal Chris Bullock and former administrative assistant Patti Flannery, headed up the grassroots effort that has produced all ten Law Firm Challenge wins to date. Their endeavors have included an in-house, on-line silent auction that includes the New York and Washington, D.C. offices; a craft fair and raffle featuring homemade items; sales of the "Sullivan Family Cookbook" and a host of other creative initiatives, like collecting fees for "Jeans Friday," and "pizza wars" among the firm’s three locations for recruiting and fundraising that produced real results.
"It has been an absolute pleasure to have the support and passion of Sullivan behind us at our Making Strides Against Breast cancer walk in Boston, and they are most deserving of the Sandra C. Labaree award," said Peg Camp, Executive Vice President and Operating Officer for the Society’s Framingham, Massachusetts-based New England Division. "The dedication, teamwork and creativity that make Sullivan successful in their fundraising endeavors on a yearly basis is inspiring and sincerely appreciated by breast cancer survivors, volunteers, participants and staff alike. Most importantly, their contributions are supporting the Society in its lifesaving work."
Since its inception in 1993, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer in Boston, one of more than 300 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks held annually in the United States, has raised nearly $58 million to support the American Cancer Society's critical mission to save lives and create a world with less cancer and more birthdays.
In 2014, 40,000 walkers at the DCR Hatch Shell raised nearly $3 million to support breast cancer research, offer free patient/caregiver services, provide in-depth cancer information, and support legislative advocacy to make sure all women have access to the care they need.
